Great guide. Thanks for putting in the time for knowledge sharing.
I didn't even realize about the PVP opportunity at my low level 7. Sounds fun to see how much different it is from the template PVP char I have already.

I'd like to add that any new character should DEFINITELY spend 2-4 levels in Ascalon area. There is a lot of good quests outside, my warr got like 12 skills for W only in a few hours.
Piken Square area also give a lot of good fun.
Actually, I ran to Lions Arch (lvl 10), then later did the Ascalon area. That really got the game going for me, new fun things all over the place.
Like the 11-17 newbie hammer, or that 7-10 sword which you can get from collector. Great fun!
So to any beta players out there who rush to Lions Arch and beyond, you miss all the new fun!!

Yep, you promote if you lose, last night i went Post-Searing for the first time and I went to battle with 2 NPCs and a human and we lost 7/11 to 4 humans in the other party (so it makes me believe we should have won if we were 4 humans... heh)
Anyway, I made my way to the post-searing even losing the battle

But it's not actually road to level 10, it's more road to level 14. I'm level 13 going on 14 and I still haven't reached lions arch, and I don't see many level 10's at the Frost Gate either...

If you're going for Droknar's armor to use at Ascalon Arena, you're more likely to get banned than helped. We don't appreciate that here.

Half of all the bandits drop worn belts. I usually end up with 20-35 worn belts if I play pre-searing through (but I use some for belt pouches, the rest for cash )

And you'd want it on your dedicated healers who'll be the last ones to enter the fight. That's the opposite of PvP play where a rez on a dedicated healer isn't going to see much play as they're going to be a primary target and go down quickly and, at the same time, every second they spend on those long casting time rezzes is another second they spend away from pumping out healing/defense. So, you stick your rezzes on your WaMo or your RaMo because they'll be among the last targeted by the opponent, in an ideal setting.

This PvP example is the exact scenario where a rez signet would be more handy than a restore life or some other skill that takes 10 seconds to cast. If you monk has been focused on and dies (which happens to the best of groups at one time or another), then you want to get the focus on the other more appropriate characters AND get that monk up as fast as possible so he can do his job. I don't like the idea of taking 10 seconds for that to happen... by that time you would be in serious trouble (much more than just having one monk down). Rez signets have a good place, and being prepared as best as possible for this situation is not the same as conceding defeat.... just smart. I don't recommend everyone having a rez signet like you will see with many groups in the Tombs... that wastes valuable space on the skill bars. Having one for a quick rez is almost necessary in some cases.

Nice article, just a quick correction, you can buy an expert salvage kit from the Sanitarium near Ascalon in post-searing.

It's now 7/12 - quite some time since the beta and this guide to lvl 10 is still pretty accurate.
In the long run the only things that I find have changed so far (i'm still pre-searing) are the lack of Henchmen (although I might not have found them so far - but i doubt it).
I'm lvl 7 (and a half) after only 2 days of playing and am sad to note that i already knew about 90% of this. However the other 10% are more than worth it. Plus i love the notes about how you shouldn't be afraid to die in this game. Entirely true and i completely agree. If you don't try everything you will miss out on something. And don't be afraid to try everything because you are only missing out on opportunities. I even tried every 2nd profession quest just to get a feel for the other characters.
I agree with some of the posts about the necro's (why the hate guys, i mean really, come on) - but again this is post beta and I am wondering if this has changed.
Everyone posted good information and Thanks to Ensign (i'm going to start collecting Dyes for a few hours tonight before i go to the academy.)
Thanks to Shrapnel - i'm going to send this to a few friends who just started playing as well and hopefully this will help them.

excellent i want to get a full set of the collectors armor before i leave for the academy as well
Time to get my remaining skills & armor pieces and head off to the academy
just a question if anybody can answer though - should i worry about going to the academy by myself? Should I get my roommate and his girlfriend to level up a bit and go in with me?

I also disagree that you will regret not learning the Resurrection Signet. I think you will be doing handstands and backflips every time you go to change skills and don't have to scroll past that particular steaming pile in your skills list.
Skills are not crucial in the early parts of the game. You can easily survive off of, say, Flare and Orison of Healing on your march to Lion's Arch. Skill power fluctuates greatly early on - Conjure Phantasm is insane, for instance, and Flare isn't the colossal waste of energy that it turns into later.
I disagree on trading. Don't even bother trying to buy, sell, or otherwise interact on the secondary market as a low level character. You'll spend five minutes trying to sell ten iron for 15 gold instead of 10, and in those 5 minutes you would have gotten the extra 5 gold anyway, on top of progressing further in the game. Once you get halfway through the game you'll be getting 5 iron from a single salvage, and pulling down as much in 10 minutes as you did in an hour as a level 1 character. If you want to make money, get to where it's time efficient to do so quickly.
A bit more advise - in the newbie area, *everyone* is a melee character. I don't care if you're a Monk, grab the best sword and shield you can find, and hit things with them. At level 1 every class is the same, and swords/axes just kill faster than everything else available. The shield also provides a bit of defense to make your hit points last that much longer. Once you get to around level 5 or so you can start to consider switching to other options if your attributes support it, but until then it's all sword/shield work.
Be sure to gather the Skale Fins for the collector right outside of Ascalon City - he'll give you a belt pouch for five, easily the best investment you'll make in the entire game. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother with the collectors unless you just happen upon one that you have the materials for. You need to free up inventory space by selling / salvaging what you find, and +2 AL to a single piece of armor just isn't worth the effort - you'll be crafting better stuff as soon as you pass the academy, anyway.
Stockpile dyes like no one's business. These are your ticket to wealth in the outside world. While just about everything else you'll find is worth one, maybe two gold if you really fight for it, a single dye can sell for 50+ gold easily. Don't squander it, don't use 'em. Just sit on it until you get to Lion's Arch - there you can sell the dyes you've accumulated for a few hundred gold pieces, which should be plenty to get you going economically.
Peace,
-CxE

LOL, what an arse, play how ever you want, having played and completed I have to disagree with the above, and just see it as obnoxious. It is not all about being a millioniare or having all the skills and runes. Its about having fun and QT playing. First time through savour it as it will actually be a brilliant game and you will enjoy it and you will cry with frustration and feel a sence of accomplisement when you finally do that mission which almost caused you to almost place a hammer through your PC.
By the time you are on you second run all of the above will be irrelivant as you will have a few plat in storage and instantly upgrade your new chars to the best gear available anyway.

I wouldn't bother too much with the collector's armor. Move along to post-searing and buying the armor there for sale can get you to Lion's Arch fairly nicely. Good Luck!
dont' worry aobut the academy, it's purely academic anyways. PvP is such a different world that this is not even a real taste. I would get all the free skills you can pick up in pre-searing, but otherwise post-searing holds another whole world.

I know what you are saying.
But I'm exploring the Pre-Searing area COMPLETELY before i move on to the academy. I want to visit every corner and try everything. As it's my first run through the game really I want to enjoy every little piece of it. Also, the whole "you can't go back" really freaked me out at first. So i was like - oh jeez - i better explore this world a little more first. And then I just fell in love with the pre-searing world. Last night I started my 2nd character and got to lvl 7 in 7 hours. I wasn't trying to power level. I was just doing everything again and loving every minute of it. But keep one thing in mind. I never knew that the limit to this game was lvl 20 until i first read this article. I understand they are probably going to raise that later on but hell. I thought it was just so easy to get to lvl 7 with my necro in a matter of 2 days that I was entirely sure that the upper limit was well beyond my reach. Now I'm wondering if I've leveled too much too early. I doubt it though. I'm gonna continue my exploring the n00b world and I hope to see you all around. Don't worry i'll go post-searing soon - i just have a few more little areas of the map to uncover and thanks for the note on the armor - but i'm only 1 piece away anyways so i might as well finish it - right?!?!
